Who is Red
Red is the Mysterious Swordswoman of the Mandate Encampment — a woman in red who once appeared atop the Dovecote tower. Her swordplay is light and graceful, but Sha Chi has already burned her face into a twisted hollow, and only a thread of reason remains. She stays atop the tower as if waiting for someone important, and when she fought Soul she had no intention of giving it her all — driven by Sha Chi, she could barely control herself.
That framing matters for the fight. She is dangerous, but she is not fighting at full intent, and the encounter ends with a clear hint that you will meet her again.
Getting there
The fight is an optional rooftop encounter. Head to the tower near the Dovecote bell in the Mandate Encampment and climb to the top — she waits up there.
This is one of the encounters in the region that is easiest to walk right past. It is tied to the Daughter of the Dark Sect side quest, so if you are running that questline, the tower is a stop you should not skip.
The glint rules still apply
Red runs on the same red and blue glint system as every other boss. Red glints signal grabs or unblockable attacks, and the answer is a dodge. Blue glints mark parryable hits. Most of her pressure comes from one of these two situations, and mixing up the answers is the main way this fight goes wrong.
The unblockable backflips
Both of Red’s unblockable attacks are tied directly to her backflip animation, which makes the backflip itself the real tell: when she flips away, something unblockable is coming.
| Move | Shape |
|---|---|
| One-Two Slash to Backflip | Two quick slashes, then a fast unblockable retreating strike as she leaps away |
| Dagger Throw | Flips backward and launches a fast projectile after landing |
The two moves open the same way — with the backflip — but they resolve differently. The one-two slash strike comes out as part of the leap itself. The Dagger Throw has a slight delay: it launches only after she has landed from the flip. That delay is the trap. If you dodge on instinct the moment you see the backflip and the red glint, you touch down early and eat the projectile. Delay your dodge slightly after spotting the backflip and the glint, and the throw whiffs past you.
Neither attack can be blocked, so the dodge is the only answer — the only question is the timing.
The Air Step Slash
Red occasionally performs a flurry of slashes while seemingly walking on air. Block the flurry and save your attention for the end: landing a perfect parry on the final hit of the combo opens her up to a counterattack.
This is her most punishable string and the one worth learning to read on sight. Everything before the finisher is blockable, so it costs almost nothing to sit behind your guard and wait for the last strike.
The crimson thread follow-up
Whenever Red binds you with crimson threads, a gap-closing strike is guaranteed to follow. The threads are not the damage — they are the telegraph.
Because the bind clearly announces the incoming strike, you get the rare luxury of preparing your answer ahead of time. Set your block or parry timing as soon as the threads land, and the follow-up becomes a rhythm beat instead of free damage on your health bar.
Rewards
Red has no recorded drop — nothing is listed as coming off this fight.
What defeating her does provide is Daughter of the Dark Sect quest progress in the Mandate Encampment. The encounter itself also hints that you will meet her again, which fits her in-game description: she stays atop the tower as if waiting for someone important.
Notes
- Red glints are dodges, blue glints are parries. Same rules as every boss.
- The backflip is the tell. Both of her unblockables hang off it.
- The Dagger Throw is delayed. It fires only after she lands — do not dodge early.
- Parry the last hit of the Air Step Slash. Everything before it is blockable.
- Threads mean a gap-closer is coming. Prepare the block or parry while you are bound.
