FAQ

Where is the Aberrant Three-Faced Puppet in Phantom Blade Zero?
Weeping Creek Valley, at The Lady's Rift. Follow the cliff-side walkways up from the starting area, climb down the ladder before the stretch draped in red silk threads, enter the rift near its bell, and head up the shrine. It is an optional fight and very easy to miss.
How do you start the Aberrant Three-Faced Puppet fight?
There is no quest to accept and no marker on the map. A crying sound drifts from below the cliff-side walkways — that sound is the signpost. Take the ladder down before the red-silk threads and the fight is waiting inside the rift.
What is the key mechanic of the fight?
Portal ambushes. The puppet retreats through rifts and re-emerges from three positions, each with different block timing: block immediately on the right portal, delay your block on the left and middle. Past 50% HP it adds a Killer Move ending in a red-glow overhead that must be perfect-parried.
What does the Aberrant Three-Faced Puppet drop?
Three-Headed Doll, the item reward for defeating it.

The Aberrant Three-Faced Puppet is an optional boss hidden in a corner of Weeping Creek Valley that most players walk straight past. There is no quest marker and no prompt — just a crying sound drifting from below the cliff-side walkways and a ladder leading down to The Lady’s Rift. Inside waits one of the strangest fights in Phantom Blade Zero: a performing puppet that vanishes through rifts, drains your Sha-Chi mid-combo, and gains a red-glow Killer Move once it drops below half health.

Getting there

The encounter sits in Weeping Creek Valley, at The Lady’s Rift. From the starting area, follow the path up the tall staircase onto the walkways built into the cliff face. Before you reach the stretch draped in red silk threads — a landmark you will recognise on sight — look for a ladder on the side of the walkway. The crying sound comes from below it.

Climb down and you reach The Lady’s Rift. Enter near its bell, then head up the shrine. Beyond the fissure in the Lady’s statue lies the courtyard of a long-abandoned manor, its corners crowded with tattered sedan chairs, opera costumes, and performing puppets, with half a puppet hanging above the central doorway. The boss waits there.

Two practical notes. First, climb down once just to activate the teleport point near the arena before you commit to the fight — it makes every retry after a wipe far shorter. Second, the crying sound is part of a series: you will hear it again in later regions, but this spot is where the three-faced puppet lives.

When to fight it

This is a side-quest fight, and the level curve treats it that way: the puppet is tuned for a much later visit. At early gear levels its health is enormous and its poise barely moves — two full poise bars of punishment remove roughly an eighth of its health, and a full attempt with low-level weapons can end with the boss still almost untouched.

The fix is numbers, not technique. Bring at least level 15 equipment: up-to-date weapons raise your damage and guard break and unlock their additional skills, and every point matters against a health bar this thick. A heavy weapon helps too — it wears the puppet’s poise down far faster than light blades. Other hidden optional walls in the early map, such as Hua, follow the same rule: find them, mark them, come back once your build has caught up.

Gear that works

Fast-attacking weapons are the recommendation here. The puppet performs large swings that leave it open for a short time after each one, and quick weapons punish those windows and deplete its poise between attacks. Fiend Saws stand out: their Fiend-Aura Erosion skill builds a gauge as you play aggressively, dealing extra damage for exactly the style this fight demands — press into every small opening, reset, and wait for the next.

Whatever weapon you carry, bring Sha-Chi Restoring Medicine as well. The puppet threads Sha-Chi draining attacks into the middle of its combos and often follows them with quick, multi-hit strings, so your resource bar empties faster here than in most fights. The Vessel Restorative is the standard contingency to recover from an onslaught.

The portal attacks

The puppet’s signature trick is the rift. It performs a quick slash, leaps back, and disappears through a rift — then re-emerges through another rift directly in front of you with a leaping slash. This is its Reality Rift. The re-emergence point is reliable: it is always in front of you. Move forward, past the rift, and the attack whiffs entirely, leaving a clean window to retaliate.

It can also emerge from three different positions with three different block timings, and treating them the same way is how guards get broken:

Portal position Attack Block timing
Left Portal Horizontal swing on emerging Delay your block to match the swing
Middle Portal Overhead slash Delay your block to match the swing
Right Portal Kick as soon as it exits Block immediately

The Right Portal is the trap. Every other re-emergence rewards patience, so the instinct is to wait — but the Right Portal kicks the instant it exits, and a delayed block eats that kick cleanly.

The Reverse Slash Combo

Outside the rift cycle, its most common string is the Reverse Slash Combo: two reverse slashes with an unusually slow wind-up. Both hits can be blocked or parried, and the slow wind-up makes them the easiest reads in the fight. Treat them as free guard damage or free counter windows whenever you are not mid-punishment.

Past 50% HP: the Killer Move

Once the puppet drops below 50% HP it adds a Killer Move to its moveset, and this is where most attempts end. The combo opens with two quick upward slashes, followed by two delayed slashes — the Sha-Chi draining move lands on the second delayed slash — and it ends in an overhead slash carrying a red glow.

That red-glow overhead is a perfect parry, not a block. If your guard is already worn down when it connects, the hit breaks your guard and the follow-up likely ends the attempt. The lead-in is your warning: as soon as the puppet starts rushing you with multiple forward slashes, get ready to move, and dodge as it jumps to trigger Ghoststep. Survive the combo once and you will read it every time after.

Rewards

Defeating the Aberrant Three-Faced Puppet rewards you with the Three-Headed Doll, the item drop tied to this fight. Treat the fight as a return trip rather than a first-pass checklist item — the courtyard cannot be cleared early with any consistency, and the drop will still be waiting when your numbers are ready.

Notes

  • No marker, no quest — the crying sound and the ladder before the red-silk threads are the only signs.
  • Open the teleport point first. Climb down once to activate it before attempting the fight.
  • Right Portal: block instantly. Left and Middle Portals: delay the block. Mixing these up is how guards break.
  • It always re-emerges in front of you — step past the rift and the leaping slash misses.
  • Past half health, the red-glow overhead is a perfect parry, not a block.
  • Level 15 equipment minimum, and a heavy weapon speeds up the poise grind on the return trip.
