Cavalrybane boss guide: dodge the tumble, punish the recovery in-game character art

Cavalrybane is a spear duelist whose forward tumble ends in a dodgeable hit. Dodge it for a cinematic counter, and watch the backward-step opener for mixed glints.

FAQ

Where is Cavalrybane in Phantom Blade Zero?
Pengzhen, past the Huang residence crossroads bell. Follow the street down to the junction where a group brawl is happening and he joins in.
Is Cavalrybane the boss or the accessory?
Both. Cavalrybane is the elite Shadow Warden boss of Town of Death, and Cavalrybane is also the name of an accessory that boosts damage against mounted enemies. This page covers the boss.
How do you stagger Cavalrybane?
Dodge the forward tumble attack — his most common move. A clean dodge triggers a cinematic counter that drains his stagger bar massively. Blocking the string does not come close.
What does Cavalrybane drop?
Armybreaker, his two-ended polearm, plus story progression through Pengzhen.

Getting there

Ring the Huang residence crossroads bell in Pengzhen, then follow the street down to the junction where a group brawl is already in progress. He joins it — you do not get a quiet arena.

Not the accessory

Cavalrybane is two things in this game: this boss, and an accessory that boosts damage against mounted enemies. If you searched the name and landed on gear stats, that is the other one — the disambiguation page covers both.

How to fight him

The tumble is the whole fight

His most common move is a forward tumble roll into a two-hit spear attack that ends in a dodgeable hit. He mixes it into strings constantly.

Dodging that last hit triggers a cinematic counter and massively drains his stagger bar. That is your damage engine — not combos, not parries. Everything else in the fight is about surviving until the next tumble.

Continuous thrust into the drain

When he starts thrusting continuously, block the string but expect a Sha-Chi-draining hit at the end — dodge that one. If his stagger bar is already low, the block sequence itself can break him, which is a bonus window.

The backward steps opener

When he opens with quick backward steps, two upward spear slashes follow. After those, he branches:

  • a Sha-Chi-draining attack into a parryable hit, or
  • his usual dodgeable forward tumble.

So the same opener can end on a parry or a dodge. Wait for the glint rather than committing to one answer — this is the one place in the fight where guessing costs you the whole exchange.

The spear lunge

His thrust lunge is the move that catches people who have not seen it. Short taps of the block button rather than holding guard handle it cleanly — the hitbox passes and you keep your Sha-Chi.

Gear

Slot Pick Why
Main weapon Outlaw Warblade Heals through a long, mobile fight
Defence Dodge the tumble, tap-block the lunge Two different answers, two different moves
Accessory Guard break or Sha-Chi You want his bar down before your own
Avoid Long combos He repositions out of them constantly

Rewards

Armybreaker — his own two-ended polearm, which is the joke this boss is built around.

Notes

  • Dodge the tumble. It is the entire stagger plan.
  • Blocking the tumble does nothing. Resist the urge.
  • Backward steps = mixed ending. Wait for the glint.
  • The thrust drains Sha-Chi. Dodge the tail of the string.
  • Tap block the lunge, do not hold guard.
