Zuo Shang boss guide: the prologue fight that teaches parrying in-game character art

Zuo Shang is the first boss in Phantom Blade Zero and a straight tutorial: block his sword rain, parry the seventh hit of the flying-sword combo, dodge the mace.

FAQ

Who is Zuo Shang in Phantom Blade Zero?
Soul's former closest friend, now his enemy, and the first boss of the game. He appears twice in the prologue: first as a normal enemy in the combat tutorial that explains Sha-Chi and parrying, then as the Diverging Paths boss fight itself.
How do you beat Zuo Shang?
Play his cues instead of racing him. Block the ranged sword volleys, parry the blue glint last hit of the flying-sword combo, and dodge — never block — the giant mace that lands after his heavy attack.
Does Zuo Shang drop anything?
No. He is a tutorial boss: beating him advances the story and unlocks the systems you need, but there is no weapon or Phantom Edge reward.
Why does the fight restart after his health bar empties?
It is a scripted time skip, not a second health bar. The second version of Zuo Shang uses harder attacks — pulsing slashes and summoned ethereal swords — but the same defensive habits still work.

Before the boss: he is also the tutorial

You meet Zuo Shang twice before you fight him properly. First he appears as a normal enemy in the combat tutorial, where the game walks you through Sha-Chi and parrying on him. Then the prologue hands you the actual boss fight.

That matters for how you read this page: everything the tutorial told you is the answer key. If you skipped the prompts, this fight is where you find out.

How to fight him

Watch his back during melee combos

His melee strings are not solo — ranged attacks come in from behind him while he is still swinging. Watch past him rather than at him, and listen: the incoming swords have an audio cue you can block on.

If you only watch the blade in front of you, the ones behind it land for free.

The finger snap means sword rain

When he snaps his fingers, a volley of ranged swords follows. Hold block through it. The volley is not the threat — what comes after is: a heavy attack into a thrown giant mace, and the mace has to be dodged, not blocked.

Be patient behind guard and take your damage in the gaps. His stagger bar fills slowly, so this is a fight of accumulation, not burst.

The flying sword combo ends parryable

He throws his sword into the air, the blade flies back to him, he lunges, and then runs a seven-hit combo. The last hit carries a blue glint — perfect parry it to break the sequence and take the fight back.

Seven hits is long enough that panicking mid-string gets you killed. Count to the end.

The lunge opener is the other branch

If he opens with a lunge instead of the flying sword, the pattern is different: a circular sword swing, four kicks, then four quick ranged attacks from the air, then a heavy attack you can dodge.

Same rule as everywhere else in this fight — block the fast stuff, dodge the heavy finisher.

The time skip

When his health bar empties, the prologue skips forward and you face him again. This is not a second phase of the same fight — it is a scripted rematch with a harder moveset: pulsing slashes and summoned ethereal swords he sends at you.

Nothing new is required of you. Stay defensive, punish the gaps, and let his bar drain.

You cannot out-gear this fight. There is nothing to farm and nothing to equip — it is the game checking whether you learned the tutorial.

Notes

  • Ranged attacks come from behind him during melee strings. Watch his back line.
  • Finger snap = block the volley, dodge the mace. Two different answers in one sequence.
  • The seventh hit of the flying-sword combo is parryable. Count it.
  • He dodges and counters. Short strings only.
  • No drop. If you are here for loot, there is none — this is the tutorial.
  • The time skip is scripted, not a health reset bug.
